Jonas Lopes

His name, Jonas, came from his mother promising herself to give her son a biblical name. When asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, Jonas answered that he wished to be each day a different animal.

He later studied at the Chapitô School, was granted an artistic residency in Italy, visited museums in Spain, did an intership at the Sao Luiz theatre and enjoyed lunch overlooking the Tejo river. After completing his course, he spent one year doing musicals to raise money and then emigrated to London. There he sang fado at various events and attended classes at the Pineapple Dance Studio.

Missing the portugese olive oil, he came back to Lisbon to record the album "Black Rose – mutant Fado" released in 2011 and was awarded the Carlos Paredes prize in 2012. Jonas joined the School of Dance where he directed his studies essentially towards an authorship in idiosyncratic speech and mainly in collaboration with Lander Patrick.

Jonas feels privileged to be able to travel as well as to learn from and work with renowed theater, music and dance figures such as Margarida Bettencourt, Tiago Guedes, Sofia de Portugal, Maria João to name a few.
