Sonya Levin (R/D)
Currently based in Berlin, Sonya Levin works as freelance choreographer, performer and teacher in Europe and Russia.She studied dance in Moscow at the Alexander Shishkin School of Contemporary Dance, the Nikolay Ogryzkov School of Contemporary Dance and Butoh dance technique at the "Theater -School of Dramatic Art" of Anatoliy Vasilyev. Later Sonya graduated in performance and choreography from "SEAD" (Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance).
While studying at SEAD, Sonya performed in projects of guest choreographers and also assisted the choreographers during the creating process ( "Les ballet C De La B." excerpts from "Foi" by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and "Happy together" by Stephanie Cumming among others ).She worked with "Na.sH" dance theater (RU), "BDDC" dance company (RU), "PO.V.S.Tanze" dance company (RU), Monkey Production" dance company (RU) and collaborated as a freelance artist in various international projects in Russia and Europe.
Sonya choreographed several plays in various theatres ("Theater .DOC" |Moscow, "Sarajevo National Theater", "Künstlerhaus" |Salzburg, "Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus", "Center of dramatic art and direction"). In 2008 and 2009 she was an artist in residence at the "Tsekh Dance Agency " in Moscow. There she produced two solo pieces "Blackout" and "The Superman's Last Supper". During her studies in Austria, Sonya created four pieces : "The Day Before", "Leck Mich Im Arsch", "Rocking Stars" and "The Game Has No Name". In 2013 she created a piece "Think Left | Feel Right" in collaboration with the Berlin based artist Marcela Giesche.
Her work has been shown at various festival such as the "International Theater Festival MESS " (Sarajevo | Bosnia and Herzegovina), LUCKY TRIMMER, 100 Grad Berlin Festival, "Zürcher Theater Spektakel", "Month of Performance-Art Berlin", "ACT Festival" (Bilbao| Spain), "International Non-Verbal Theatre Festival PERSONAL PROFILE" (Moscow| Russia), "Plums fest" (Moscow|Russia), "TsEKh Moskva - Berlin Contemporary Dance Festival" (Berlin| Germany), "New Faces - New Dances" (Salzburg | Austria).
After being featured at the LUCKY TRIMMER Tanz Performance Serie #16, Sonya became an invited curator of the festival sharing her expertise of the art field.
Her piece "The Day Before" was awarded with the "Best Performer in Dance" at "ACT Festival" in Bilbao, Spain. In 2013 Sonya was granted a DanceWEB scholarship.
