The Wall
In 2014 the 10th LUCKY TRIMMER birthday coincides with the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Those two remarkable historical events give reason for our special edition entitled: "The Wall", introducing for the first time ever, a themed evening packed with a waterfall of World, European and German premieres. "The Wall" navigates through the underground and troubled waters of the national and international dance and performance art scene. Out of over 200 applications our unassimilated and weatherproof jury has selected those pieces which in a surprising, convincing, controversial, astonishing, wondrous or simply fun way delve into diverse aspects of topics such as division, identity or belonging. Of course our 10-minute-limit per piece is as always holy and unavoidable. The result is a choppy and adventurous journey with 8 stopovers. The dramaturgically staged confrontation of these works with completely different ideas and performative designs allows complex and multifaceted insights to emerge while illustrating similarities, recurring patterns and relations of processes that are seemingly unconnected. With contemporary dance and its wide aesthetic spectrum as our primal inspiration, we consciously cross the boundaries of genres, as dance alone does not reflect the current complex and interdisciplinary landscape of creative production. Barriers between dance, theater, performance, music, installation, acrobatics and others are broken down, questioned and relations between them newly explored and an atmosphere of artistic freedom supported by the concept of the "Child Mind" is installed. Embodying the blithely curious and unprejudiced approach of a child to creative expression, we aim to tackle complex topics and make them accessible in a new way.
The inclusion of co-production partners with individually shaped historical and geographical relationship to "Walls" underlines the relevance and internationality of this topic (L1 association, MACHOL SHALEM Dance House and Egomio Cultural Center). LUCKY TRIMMER was pleased to present "The Wall" in Berlin at the SOPHIENSAELE Theater (31 October and 01 November 2014) and with the support of the Egomio Cultural Center in Nicosia, Cyprus (04 & 05 November 2014). After the collapse of the Berlin Wall, Nicosia became the last remaining divided capital with the southern and the northern portions divided by the Green Line.
The fundamental goal of LUCKY TRIMMER "The Wall" is to raise awareness and offer new ways of understanding and discussing complex topics around separation, barriers and walls - both physical and mental. We intend to uncover existing prejudices and to promote more tolerance and acceptance through dialogue about these controversial subjects in our globalised society.
